Susan is certified in NSEV Healing, which is a type of Acupuncture related to emotional and spiritual healing. She has maintained a private practice of acupuncture, body work, herbalism, nutrition, meditation and facial rejuvenation for eighteen years.
Born and raised in Wayne, New Jersey, Susan relocated to Florida in 1984. From the time Susan was in high school she worked in hospitals as a Nursing Assistant in Progressive Coronary and Intensive Care. This early experience as a health care provider shaped her future as she studied coronary telemetry readings, received her EMT license, and worked through her prerequisites for Nursing.
During this time, Susan discovered the amazing benefits of TCM, which led her to change her focus from Western to Eastern Medicine. Five years later, she became a graduate of the Community School of Traditional Chinese Healthcare. She has continued to study NSEV Healing with her teacher, Dan Nevel on an ongoing basis, and has transferred this knowledge into acupressure treatments with essential oils and facial rejuvenation programs. Susan has also worked closely on Oriental Facial Rejuvenation Protocols with the Microcurrent Research company. She incorporates scalp and facial acupuncture, microcurrent treatments, and Chinese facial massage into her treatment protocols, and trains many practitioners on this subject.
Susan has a passion for nutrition and cooking. She is a vegetarian, and grows her own herbs and sprouts at home. She teaches Vegetarian Cooking Classes in Ft. Lauderdale, and thoroughly enjoys sharing her knowledge and healthy meal preparation skills.
Susan is the Owner of Health Oriented Natural & Alternative Medicine, a thriving practice of TCM and Holistic Healthcare in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. She is a continuing education provider for Acupuncturists, and regularly hosts CEU classes at Health Oriented. She also co-hosts meditation classes and group TCM Healing Treatments. Acupuncture is an ancient medical system which has been proven as a safe and effective method of healthcare. By activating the body's own natural healing abilities, acupuncture can both preserve and restore wellness, as it simultaneously addresses both a condition and its root cause. Acupuncture needles are sterile and disposable, and extremely thin, and treatment is virtually painless. Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine have thrived for centuries, and have found a valuable position in modern healthcare.
The World Health Organization (WHO) and the National Institute of Health (NIH) recognize acupuncture for over fifty common disorders including neck, back and joint pain, sciatica, anxiety, depression, insomnia, addictions and detoxification, immune disorders, hearing issues, visual problems, headaches, TMJ, fatigue, post stroke, Bell’s palsy, Parkinson’s, cancer support (pre and post radiation and chemo), diabetes, sinus problems, asthma, digestive disorders, gallstones and kidney stones, arthritis, fibromyalgia, hepatitis, shingles, skin disorders, high or low blood pressure, menstrual problems, fertility issues, chronic UTI’s, induction of labor, menopausal symptoms, male sexual disorders, and prostatitis. There are many more treatable conditions listed on the WHO website.
All acupuncture treatments are performed by a Florida state licensed and nationally board certified Doctor of Oriental Medicine. All needles are sterile and disposable, and treatments are virtually painless. Patients should allow 60-90 minutes for their first visit, which includes a comprehensive health intake and consultation. Subsequent treatments take approximately 60 minutes.
NSEV (Non-Somatic Extraordinary Vessel) Healing treats and prevents disease in a way that integrates the mind, body, spirit, and emotions. Based on ancient Chinese medical concepts, NSEV is a modern adaptation of acupuncture which utilizes the traditional methods of acupuncture, gold and silver needles, and ion cords connecting the needles. It addresses core patterns of function, as well as symptoms such as physical pain and emotional issues. This in turn facilitates health and harmony both internally and externally.
Adjunct treatments are also applied such as cupping, moxibustion or heat therapy, massage, topical herbs, rolling, magnets, music, and aromatherapy with essential oils. NSEV herbal formulations have been developed to address and harmonize each of the eight Extraordinary Vessels, and are excellent at treating disorders of the "shen" or spirit, depression, and insomnia. These formulas are available at Health Oriented’s pharmacy.
NSEV treatments are also offered as a shared experience, where groups of people receive the same treatment simultaneously. Points are chosen depending on the time of year or desired goal of a particular session. Many times group NSEV experiences are advantageous on the new and full moons or on the solstice and equinox. Health Oriented is offering NSEV shared group experiences on a regular basis. Contact us for details.
NSEV healing was researched and developed by Daniel Nevel, AP in Miami Beach. Susan is certified in this practice, and Dan's office refers patients to her on a regular basis.
Chinese acupressure and bodywork are ancient healing arts which increase circulation, reduce stress, improve mobility and flexibility, and decrease pain and discomfort. Acupressure and Bodywork can range from gentle and subtle touch to deep and penetrating pressure. Treatments are always tailored to the individual, and are based on body type, pathology, and conditions.
Certified organic massage oils and essential oils are available on request.
Herbal Medicine is an extraordinarily valuable resource for healing that has also been in existence for thousands of years. Much like acupuncture, herbs possess the ability to promote the body’s natural functions while addressing the root cause of imbalance and disease.
In many cases, herbal medicine works with the law of opposites. If a patient’s system is too cold, herbs are prescribed to warm the body. If a system is too hot, herbs are prescribed to cool the body. If a patient has a feeling of drained energy and fatigue, herbs are prescribed to lift and transform the energy. If there is a feeling of intensity and hyperactivity, herbs are prescribed to bring down the energy and provide grounding. Since there are so many variables when it comes to each individual case, every herbal formula is customized so that each patient receives exactly what they need.
Herbal medicine can be prescribed for any issue that is treatable with acupuncture, and many times patients call for an appointment if they are feeling like they are coming down with a cold, headache, stomach virus, or pulled muscle. The earlier a health problem is treated, the quicker the result in many cases. Formulations are prepared by an experienced trained Herbalist, to safely and naturally provide improved overall health, longevity and balance.
Herbs are available in a variety of forms, including liquid extracts, powders, capsules and tablets. All of Health Oriented’s herbal products, essential oils and health supplements are of the highest quality available.
Asian Facial Rejuvenation is currently one of the most sought-after treatments offered by Health Oriented. A safe and effective alternative to plastic surgery or Botox, Asian facial rejuvenation provides a younger, contoured, and more radiant look, without dangerous side effects. It yields some very positive results, which look natural, and keep the expression of the face intact. Benefits include improved muscle tone, increased circulation, and enhanced collagen and elastin production. Fine lines, wrinkles and tension are reduced as sagging muscles gently tighten. Tight muscles are relaxed to receive additional blood flow.
Asian facial rejuvenation was originally developed for patients with Bell’s Palsy or post-stroke. The result of treatment was so cosmetically effective that it transformed into an acclaimed program for anti-aging and beauty. The number of treatments depends upon the patient’s age, sun exposure, skin condition and other factors. Once the optimum level of improvement is achieved, an occasional maintenance treatment keeps the face looking its best.
There are different protocols of Asian facial rejuvenation, which are chosen to best fit each patient’s age, skin type, time limits, and financial preferences:

Biopuncture is a highly effective therapy in which acupuncture points are injected with natural products derived from plants. Most injections are either vitamin B or homeopathic, and may be combined for higher efficacy. Biopuncture is effective in treating pain and inflammation such as sprains, tendonitis, golf and tennis elbow, plantar fasciitis, carpal tunnel, osteoarthritis and sports injuries, as well as digestive problems, allergies, asthma, eczema, hay fever, cystitis, sinusitis, headaches, immune function and much more. It improves circulation, repairs tissues, relaxes the muscles, and detoxifies the body.
Biopuncture works by stimulating the immune system’s innate healing capabilities. In conventional medicine, high dosages of drugs suppress symptoms almost immediately. Once the medication stops working, more of it is required to maintain pain relief. However, biopuncture works with small doses of substances that stimulate natural healing processes, and awaken the body’s naturally available mechanisms. The healing effect originates from within the body, not from the products. The immune system provides the reaction which acts as a catalyst to pain relief and healing. Symptomatic relief may take awhile if the problem has been present for months or years, but recent injuries usually show rapid results.
Patients are pleasantly surprised at how easily and quickly the injections are given. Biopuncture can benefit those who have tried conventional medicine without success, or due to side effects. In some cases it may be advantageous to combine conventional medicine with Biopuncture. Contact us for more information.
For centuries in The Orient, nutrition has been considered an integral part of health and wellness. Foods were prescribed for many health issues with positive results, and nutrition continues to maintain an important role in Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Basic principles include a balance of cooked and raw foods, hot and cold thermodynamics, eating according to the season, and harmonization of flavors. It was found that each particular food had a direct correlation with one or more of the five elements, and by working with dietary guidelines within these five elements, a person could greatly improve digestion and overall wellness.
The flavors of the five elements are sour, bitter, sweet, spicy, and salty. Each flavor has a direct effect on the organs of the body, as well as the emotions:
It is clear why working with five element nutrition can be beneficial, and why nutrition can be applied as medicine. We are dedicated to helping our patients with healthy dietary options, and we offer fun and informative nutritional cooking classes. Contact us for further information.
Meditation has been practiced for many centuries, by countless cultures. Scientific research reveals that meditation slows respiration, lowers blood pressure, reduces stress and anxiety, improves mood and disposition, enhances sleep, strengthens the immune system, and lowers stress hormone levels. It has been shown that meditating for 30 minutes provides more psychological rest than 8 hours of sleep.
Meditation is not about forcing the mind to be quiet. It’s about experiencing the peace that is already present and accessing the inner calm stillness that already lies beneath the mind’s activity. A mind can run in many different directions. It can cause preoccupation with what has happened in the past, or what may happen in the future. Once the mind becomes silent in meditation and the present moment is realized, the full potential of energy, creativity and spontaneity can be accessed. Meditation also improves concentration and intuition, and helps the mind detach from negative and stressful circumstances.
Even during deep meditation, the mind is awake and aware, although relaxed and quiet. Deep meditation and chanting can create a vibration which helps the mind slip into the space between thoughts, disengaging from distracting internal chatter and realizing the nature of pure awareness.
