Natural Alternatives to Quick Fix Drugs

The number of over-the-counter medications at the drugstore continues to increase, despite adverse health effects and reactions. Commercials on television remind us to take antacids, decongestants, diarrhea medication, anti-depressants and other prescription drugs:

"But remember, if you experience nausea, vomiting, headache, bleeding, bruising, sudden blindness or panic attacks..."
Are you listening? Does this seem acceptable?

The reason that these ill effects take place is simple. The human body has the ability to reject anything that it finds potentially harmful. The adverse effects may not be apparent for months or years, and the person taking the medication may assume that their health is improving, but it is usually only a matter of time until something breaks down.

The kidneys, from a Chinese Medical standpoint, are like the pilot light of the human body. They are the root energy, which supplies the other organs with their "power". The liver works as a circulatory organ, coursing this power through the body. If either of these organs is compromised, the overall health of the body suffers. These, of course, are the two organs most affected by drugs.

The human body contains everything it needs to survive, including a thermostat - this is the reason why it turns up the heat when it's exposed to an external pathogen, such as a cold virus. A low-grade fever is an indicator that the immune system is functioning, but many people reach for an aspirin to shut it off. Even if a fever rises to a higher level, it is not always necessary to take aspirins or antibiotics, which can damage the digestive system. Many different herbs and natural treatments such as acupuncture may be utilized to work with the body to heal itself. Of course, plenty of extra water should be consumed any time there is even a slight increase in temperature. If all else fails, and antibiotics are your choice, be sure to take acidophilus. This will replace the natural and vital bacteria of the intestinal tract, which dies when exposed to the cold energy of antibiotics.

Heartburn and acid reflux are also indicators of imbalance. A simple change in diet is usually in order, such as eating foods rich in enzymes. Salads, sprouts, and juiced fruits and vegetables such as carrot, celery, beet, and apple are a few examples. Add a little fresh ginger to your diet, and consume a variety of raw and well-cooked foods. Eat earlier in the evening, and avoid fried, over-spiced, sweet, processed, fatty or rich foods. An herb called Kudzu from The Orient can be prepared with apple juice as a pudding to increase alkalinity. Other herbal medicine or enzyme supplements prescribed by your natural healthcare physician may also be appropriate. Heartburn is an early warning of imbalance, which can potentially lead to future problems such as ulcers, gallbladder disease, even high cholesterol or heart disease. The body is intelligent enough to give us this signal - and many people turn it off with antacids. Listen to your body!

Diarrhea is a subject that most people hate to discuss, but it's a way that your body rids itself of pathogenic toxins. And what do they tell you on TV? Take this medicine and KEEP IT IN! Yuck. Stop second-guessing your body and let it function. If you consume anything that may have been past its date, or stuffed yourself full of excessive fatty rich foods, your body will let you know the next day, or maybe even the same night! Let it out, drink plenty of water, and have some ginger, fennel, or mint tea to calm things down. Kudzu pudding made with apple juice may also be a good choice. Of course, if diarrhea is present over 2-3 days, a more serious approach may be needed. See your natural healthcare professional to prescribe the appropriate herbs and treatment.

Sinus congestion is another way that your body disposes of toxins. During a cold, mucus production is a way of releasing the infection from the lungs and sinuses. If you listen to what they say on television, you'll take a decongestant to feel clearer, but your body will hold the toxins in, instead of releasing them. When these toxins aren't released, the body has to keep re-processing them. This is not in the best interest of health and balance, is it? Blow your nose and cough it up - as many times as you need to. Take a warm bath or shower and use essential oils of peppermint and eucalyptus to open the airways and sinuses. Most importantly, get some REST. If symptoms persist, you may need a prescription of stronger herbs for a faster recovery.

If the body is given the proper care - A balanced diet, plenty of fresh water, exercise, clean air, enough sleep, and a healthy emotional environment, it will function at its optimum level. If it is neglected or abused, it will certainly let you know. There are a number of qualified natural healthcare professionals in the Fort Lauderdale area who can work with you on your healthcare. Acupuncture and Herbs, Homeopathy, Natural Nutrition, Chiropractic, Massage, and Aromatherapy are only a few of the services available.
